SDSN provided technical support to the new study on Beyond GDP commissioned by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD), taking advantage of the current political window at the European level and the current discussions at the global level, notably ahead of the UN Summit of the Future. As an attempt to overcome GDP’s numerous shortcomings, this preliminary study proposes a GDP+3 framework of three headline indicators complementing GDP, each covering one of the three key pillars of sustainable prosperity: social, environmental, and institutional dimensions. A GDP+3 framework can help translate the vision of sustainable prosperity into an actionable agenda and allow a better response to citizens’ fundamental aspirations.
